Teachers' Conference and ExCEL Fest 2023

Many of my friends know that one of my greatest interests is EDUCATION because of my past corporate HR and training background.

Hence I’m still a member of the Education Govt Parliamentary Committee or GPC and frequently spoke on the topic.

One HIGHLIGHT last week for me was meeting an education expert I had been “stalking” over the years. He is Andreas Schleicher, OECD’s Director for Education and Skills - one of the keynote speakers at the MOE Teachers’ Conference.

Andreas thinks highly of Singapore’s education system and our seriousness in investing in lifelong learning.

A few key points he made are food for thought :

  • Are even our young at risk of aspiring jobs that can be soon be automated?

  • How do we make continued education and training the floor under our feet?

  • How do we educate now - if creativity is the engine of the 21st century and literacy is about constructing (not regurgitating ) knowledge?

  • How can we stop divorcing learning and assessment but integrate the two, so we learn better?

At the same conference, I chuckled and worried about the marvel of AI! How can I forget Education Minister Chan Chun Sing’s AI-produced talking images of himself in both serious and rapper modes? And his vision of education for the future.

The three-day learning festival hosted some 18,000 participants this year and presented a mix of online and offline masterclasses, learning journeys, and workshops.
