Farewell, Timothy!
I bade farewell to resident Timothy Heng, who lost his life in the recent Mount Dukono eruption. The tragedy took three lives, including fellow Singaporean hiker Shahin Muhrez Abdul Hamid, to whose family I also send my deepest condolences.
Timothy has an amazingly supportive and loving family, led by Adrian and Michelle, with whom I had partnered on some community matters.
The family organised a private memorial service to honour and celebrate Timo's life. So many came. He is evidently well loved and dearly missed.
Here is what I penned at the service:
"Timo's life and departure have left a deep mark — his character; his 'leaving-no-man-behind' bravery; his turning back and covering his buddy in his last moments; his many talents and a life that took the path less trodden. Timothy's is an exceptional life from which we have much to learn. Take care, and we look forward to seeing you in Heaven."
Much of what happened in his final moments was shared by his fellow hikers and guide.
In my book, young Timothy is a hero whose spirit, life principles and character live on.
Farewell, Timothy. I salute you.
