Professor Brawn Express

I’m so touched that Minister of State Jasmin Lau took time to study the different models of school canteen operations on the ground. Today she came to the school where I serve as volunteer.

The Autism Resource Centre Singapore / Pathlight School school canteen model was borne out of two pivotal needs – one, to find a replacement for a canteen operator who would stay long enough to support the students; and two, to find real sustainable meaningful jobs for adults on the autism spectrum who are unable to work in the open job market without support.

The model met both goals and more – it became an authentic life skills training ground for the students to transact purchases, update their skills, e.g. going cashless, communicating their needs.

It is a model that still needs fine tuning for greater scalability but from the positive vibes it generates daily, something must be going right. And the canteen or tuckshop is now called Professor Brawn Express – a brand that hopefully one day can help many more.
